A few Reports from Capt. Jim

8/15/2011: Fished Thursday PM and Friday. Storms kept us off the lake on Saturday. Went 7 for 8 on Thursday and 17 for 25ish on Friday (lost track of lost fish). All Kings and Steelhead and no lakers. Biggest fish was 21 lbs and two were smaller and released. Fish were biting just about everything including white, green and blue flies on white and glowing paddles/spin doctors and mag spoons. Amazing what less than a week will do for fishing after a slow Big Red Classic. - Capt. Jim

8/20/2011: Fished Saturday PM in rough seas out of the north. Put one in the boat when a junior fisherman started turning green and we decided to pull lines. While pulling lines, out six more in boat for a total of seven kings. All on flies and spoons between 110 and 130 FOW. Green, white and Blue colors were working best. Fished about 55 to 75 feet down on riggers and dipseys 125 to 200 feet out. - Capt. Jim

8/22/2011: Fished Monday PM in calm seas and went 3 for 8 with one fish breaking a line and another biting a fly off. Fished same zone and depths as on 8/20 with the same exact rigging..... Smallest fish was 14 pounds and biggest was just under 19 pounds (on the scale). Two that broke off were nice size also! - Capt. Jim

Big Red Classic was a lot of fun

Well, Team Rhino had lot of fun fishing the Big Red Classic last weekend.  We had our troubles finding the fish.  We also had our trouble with a tough current on day one and we dragged around a couple of tangles for way too long (explaining why we weren't getting any hits). We finished with our heads hanging low with 2 kings on day one and 3 lakers on day 2.  Fishing was a bit tougher on Day 2 for most boats and I don't think I've ever caught 3 Lakers without even boating one salmon.  Lead lines and dypsies with flies took all our hits as the downriggers stayed silent.

Who can provide a fishing Report

I've been up North for the past week and would love to know where the Salmon are in Holland.  Does anybody have a report or two to share?  Thanks, Wade

Ken & I got up early & tried Thumb Lake, AKA Lake Loise on kens boat. Only a Bass & couple of perch. It's a beautiful lake & we may try again tomorrow.

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

The fishin near Gaylord has been ok. A lot of little perch on worms, jigs, & spinners. Only couple of jumbos. The jumbos came on a crank bait (bass too).

I've heard from a couple of fisherman over the weekend that while lakers & steelhed are biting in 100-160 the salmon are in 220-260.

July 5 - Evening

Well Capt. Jim and I took out Mark and his 3 grandsons last night hoping to get each of the kids on a salmon.  The kids each got a chance to reel a fish in, unfortunately it was the same fish.  It was a pretty slow evening, staying mostly in the range of 110 to 140 FOW.  We ended 2 of 3, catching a 12 lb Laker and a 8 lb Steelhead.  The one we missed was another big steelhead that rocketed 3 feet out of the water about 15 feet behind the boat before we ever new we had a hit.  All three hit on what I call a silver wonderbread magnum spoon, 70 down.

Big night fishing!

Paul and I had great night of fishing from 6 to 9:45pm on Wednesday.  It started off with the same lead line getting the first 3 hits (2 in the box).  It was a 15 color lead line with a magnum white wonderbread spoon.  We got the idea, and put a magnum silver wonderbread on a downrigger and then that took a fish.  So I looked for any other similar spoons to put out there.  I found a magnum bloody nose with a big black dot and tried that because it was the closest in color/size.  Then that took a fish.  Dipsies and flies were quiet all night. We ended the night 6 for 10, 5 kings and a nice 9 lb steelhead.  We had two double headers before 8 pm.  During one double, a huge king, 15 lbs or so, had its way going through our lines and making big mess - we ended up losing both fish.  We spent most our time in 120 to 130 FOW.  We heard from another boat fishing close to us that at 8:30 they didn't have any hits yet.  Most of the action on my boat was before 8pm.  The water was calm, 67 degrees on the surface, a great sunset, and a refreshing swim after the lines were up.

June 28th in the Evening

Despite hearing slow reports from the weekend that mostly composed of Lake Trout, I decided to go out with Ryan and Dave Monday after work.  We fished from 6:30 to 9pm. The fishing was pretty good as we ended the night 4 for 5, all Kings. 2 were very nice fish, 10 & 14 lbs.  The other 2 were shakers that I pulled in while checking lines.  I'm pretty sure we would of picked up more fish had we not been dragging 2 around for most of the night.  The big kings came on flies and dipsies, one up high and one down low.  Both were homemade flies, one was blue and mirage and the other was orange and mirage.  The small fish came on a Green Dolphin Glow on lead & the other on a Wonderbread magnum (I previously was mistaken when I called it Cotton Candy). I'm hoping to get back out tonight, but its blowing really hard out of the West today.

6-21-11 Morning

Went out this morning and fished from 6:30 to 9:30 and ended up with 2 kings in the box.  We missed another 2 or 3.  Spoons of all different varietys were hit on lead and downriggers, including a Michael Jackson, a Green Dolphin Glow, a Coyote Ugly, and a Magnum Cotton Candy.  The hits came 2 at a time.  First in the 100 Foot Range, then in 125 FOW.  We spent all of our time between 80 and 135 FOW.

The Fish Are Biting but Moving

Reports have been hit and miss this weekend.  It sounds like the shallow dark water off Saugatuck slowed down, but some of the deeper, 50-100 FOW has picked up off Holland and Port Sheldon.  I saw a crew of 7 guys posing for a picture and each of them was holding a nice king.

Rumors of good fish'n

I haven't seen many boats yet, but rumors are that fish are being caught off the Saugatuck and Holland Channels.  Included was a giant brown on Holland North Side by the inlet to Lake Mac.

It is getting closer to Fishing on Lake Michigan

I'll be adding this blog to the Eldean Fishing Report this year.  Hopefully it will be a good way to get additional fishing reports out there so everybody can catch a few more fish.

The ice has started to melt and some of Lake Macatawa has opened up by the Channel.  Only a couple of months left to get your gear tuned up for the upcoming season.  I'm adding a subtroll this year so I can better track temp and speed at the ball.
