Pier Fishing

Well I haven't been out in a couple of weeks. I heard a mixture of, skunks, slow reports, and OK reports from friends and customers. I've seen some boats fishing the channel and heard of salmon being caught off the channel. Most recently a heard of a skunk in 165+ FOW and a couple of nice kings being caught in 120 FOW.

This good report was sent in from the Port Sheldon Channel today: Wed, Sept 19. Fished N. Pier Port Sheldon. Two hours 3 coho, 2 misses. Casting about 1/2 way down from shore. Used large white/clear bass plug (diver). Bit windy but fish were in.

Gold Coast Salmon Tournament

I hadn't been out in a while and all I heard was that the fishing was slow and the meat rigs were working well. Mark and I went out for team practice Friday morning to find out where the fish were and what they were biting on. We fished from 7-10am from 60 to 210 FOW. The fish were all stacked up in 100 to 120 but we didn't get any to bite. We continued West and picked one up in 145 and missed another in 160. We were fishing with the usual set up and concluded we should get some meat for the tournament.

The Saturday Tournament, the Team of Mark, Ken, John and I got things going pretty well off the start with 3 fish in the first hour or so fishing in 100 - 115 FOW. Then, fishing stalled on our boat. We had several hits that didn't stay on and I also missed a nice 15 lb with the net after it went around the downrigger cable. We ended 5 of 9. Early on, the 2 Dipsy Fly Set ups were hot going 3 of 4. Then as the day went on, most of the action came on our meat rig behind a big white paddle, 100 down on the rigger, going 2 of 4. Our J-plug meet rig down on another rigger did not get any action. We only had one hit on a spoon and it seemed we were washing our lead lines for the entire morning. We ended with 50 lbs of fish, all kings.

Congratulations to all the fishermen out there! There were a lot that weighed all 9 fish.

Report from Capt. Jim

Tried to fish on Thursday and Friday last week but Mother Nature did not
cooperate. Finally got out on the water Saturday and went 6 for 9 in the AM and
1 for 3 in the PM. All Kings. Water very warm with temperatures close to 70
degrees all the way down to 70 feet. Caught all fish in 180 to 212 FOW on 450
or 300 copper and deep diving dipseys. Ran flies, plugs, bait rigs and spoons
and patterns of green, white blue and chrome with some glow worked best. No
takers on spoons, all hits came on bait, flies and plugs. Hope light east wind
will bring some cold water in down deep! Capt. Jim - The Fishing Poles

Few, no Skunk

It was slow fishing last night as I road along on the Fishing Poles. Reports sent us out deep to 200 FOW, but we didn't have any quick luck so we pointed the boat back to shore. We finally got a double at 135 FOW, but we only landed one. It was on a green fly. We fished from 7 to 9:15 and ended 1 for 2.

Wednesday Night

I took Efren and his family (all from Mexico) fishing Wednesday night before they have to head back South of the Border. It was a windy, wavy night so we just fished 6 poles (2 lead, 2 dipsys, 2 down). There was no action on the dipsy fly combos and everything came on spoons. The sames ones were were working. But I've also have thrown a small pro-king, black, dark green, and a dark pink/red ladder back into the mix which has done well. We ended 4 for 9, with one steelhead and 3 kings.

Fishing conditions were a bit challenging for several reasons: Wind and waves, rookie fisherman, sea-sickness, and NO NET. Yep, we left the dock without the net. The 4 fish we brought in were between 5 and 12 lbs. To get the big ones in the boat, they needed to be subdued with a gentle tap on the head, then I just grab them by the gills and bring 'em in. Unfortunately, we did lose a 15 pounder because it shook the hook after my first attempt.

We lost a huge one that on 1.5 core lead that fought for 20 minutes. We also had a double where one fish from the downrigger got hung up in the fish on the lead. We barely got the first fish in because it was dragging the other one (I thought we had tow fish on the downrigger because we were running a slider too). Once in, I had to cut the lead line to get rid of the twisted sections, re-tie it to the backing/reel and then we brought the second fish in. Not bad for a real mess.

Mostly in 100-110 FOW fishing North and South.

Fish'n down deep - from the Corner Office

Set out tonight (Monday) with low expectations not knowing if the SW wind would lay down or it would be an evening of bump and grind and pull lines early. Planed out to 180 FOW but I had
to admire the guy in the 16’ boat behind me trying to get out deep as well. He worked for every foot of water he put under the boat. Dropped two downriggers with 15’ balls at 90’ and 100’ where there was 46 degree water and nothing else. Followed the current in east to take a break from the pounding and hooked up with two small kings up to 150 FOW on a killer yellow Stinger 90’ down on a rigger and got a nice 12 lb-ish king at 135 FOW on a killer blue Stinger SW-rig total of 100’ down. Then it got quite for at least an hour. I kept with the Keating program of fish deep,
less is more and kept the two riggers pinned low in the water. I decided to follow the cold bottom water in shallow and hit a 14 lb king on the SW set up in about 110 FOW, released that and hit another immediately a little shallower about the same size on the same rigger. Put a dark blue J on the opposite rigger and it took about a 8 lb king quickly. SW fired again in 95 FOW about 5’ off the bottom with a laker that was promptly released. As soon as SW was put down in 91 FOW it roared to life with a slow tip down followed by a 10 pass run, a pause and then another pair of 4-6 pass runs, a stalemate in the water and then the excitement ended with the dreaded tip up and fish no more. Figures the best run of the night never made it to the back of the boat. For the evening, went 7 for 8 with two rods. All fish were released successfully except one, which felt really bad about. I did a bad job of dropping it back in the water. I have a program going where if you can get the fish in quickly, you can either unhook it at the back of the boat or if I have to net the fish, I get the hook out quickly and the drop back into the water is the key step. If you can achieve a gentle nose down plunge into the water, these fish can make it. I have let a half dozen 14 lb fish go like this and they take off to fight another day. The smaller fish have no problem at all.

Solo Trip from Capt. Stec of the Corner Office

Set out today (Wed. Night) for 120+ FOW and found fish biting in 165 FOW. SWR with Killer Blue spoon 80’ down total took 3 kings, two on an outside turn and both of these were in the 14 lb neighborhood. The other was about 10 lbs and all three were released successfully. I have caught enough 14 lb kings this year to measure them up well. The other rigger, 88’ down, with a similar spoon but so old who knows what it is called took two kings around 10 lbs. All fish hit between 160 to 170 FOW. One hit came on a wire diver, 3 set with a ring 190’ back but the white spinny and fly were lost. Some times the fish just have the upper hand. Not all that bad for a 6:00pm to 9:30pm outing. -Rich

Little Sable, Big Fish

We took a quick trip North for a couple of nights on the boat. As usual, I couldn't pass up fishing near Little Sable Point. Sinse this is a family vacation, I left the down riggers at home. We dropped 5 lines (2 dipsys and 3 lead), 10 miles South of Little Sable and fished North in 80-110 FOW. We fished Sunday afternoon from 1-3 (obviously not prime fishing time) and had are hands full. We ended 3 for 5, 2 kings and 1 fat Coho. Ryan caught one king that was really long but not too fat - however it boasted 17lbs on the scale. The other king was about 13 lbs.

We were down to fishing only 2 poles for a while as fish were biting and we snagged onto somebodies wire line and planer board that was adrift. We had to slow and even stop the boat to get this mess in, which in turn caused our own mess.

We'll be heading south tomorrow and hit the same spot again. I Can't Wait!

The Big Red Classic Tournament is this weekend. They are still accepting entries. Just Do It!

The Fishing Poles Land Some Big Fish

Went out Tuesday evening to rough seas and a stiff NW wind. Ended up 8 for 12,
one steelhead and the rest kings. All nice fish over 10 lbs... To rough to
fish planer boards so ended up fishing dipseys and riggers with spoons and
flies, no plugs. Fish came 55 to 70 feet down in 85 to 140 FOW. Blue, green
and white combinations worked best. Good evening even though rough water made
it tough to fish. Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles

A Mexican Fishing Fiesta

Last night, I took out my friends from Mexico, Efren and Leo. Dave also made it out and Paul was first mate. We fished from 6 to 9 pm. The heat finally broke and there were strong NE winds last night making it difficult to keep a heading. Fortunately, the fish were cooperating and biting on any direction of troll. We did well in 110 to 140 FOW ending the night 5 for 8, with 4 nice sized Kings and 1 big Steelhead. The Lead Lines and Flies were hot last night and the riggers were slow with only one hit.

The same lures keep working for me. The All-Stars have been a small white/silver pro-king spoon, a Magnum LemonBerry spoon, a home-spun gold/white fly, and a green mirage type of fly. I've been running the flies 140 to 160 back on dipsys set on 1.

Good Night at the Office!

From the "Corner Office" - Interesting night on the water running solo with 3-rods. Set out south of Holland and worked the 120 FOW north of Saugatuck. Boated a large laker instantly on Killer Blue set down 50 feet on a 2-color SWR. Picked up 4 more kings in the 8lb range on a south troll, all on the SRW set-up during the course of the evening. All kings were release successfully. Went looking for steel deeper but came up empty. Pushed in to 60 FOW and turned north for the troll back to port. Ran through bait fish in 58 FOW and had all 3 rods explode within 90 seconds. Boated a 14lb king, one slightly smaller and the third I dropped at the back of the boat during netting (my bad). It went belly up so I backed the boat up on both engines and got right on top of the fish. Dropped the net down and it came to life and went back to the deeps. Better off but I would have like the chance to boat all three on my own. The other two rods that went off, not that it mattered were a copper yellow edge stinger on a dipsey 3-set 110 feet out and the dark blue fly on a spinny 45 feet down. Great way to finish the evening.

A little white pro king

I took my friend Bill and his family out fishing last night. There were 9 of us total on the boat so we were ready for a couple triple headers. We didn't get a triple, but we had one double and steady action from the time we set lines at 5:30pm. It was a bit rough and we pulled lines just after 8pm because there were several sea-sick crew who had been tolerating it for the past couple of hours. Even though we brought in lines early, we ended 5 for 7 with two big kings and 3 nice Steelhead. Interestingly, with 9 lines out, 4 of our 7 hits came on a white pro king spoon on a 12 color lead line. A green mirage fly caught the 2 kings on a dipsy 160 back set on 1. The other spoon to see action was the Lemon Berry Magnum, 90 down.

We stayed in 120 to 135 FOW. Captain Jim fished inside of us, in 100 to 115 FOW and ended his night 8 for 15.

Fishing Fireworks on the 4th!

July 4th Evening Troll -
Remarkable 4th of July evening troll catching fish on all eight set-ups. Set lines last
night at 5:15pm starting in 150 FOW, N42’ 43.5’’ trolling south. Started with 12 lb lake trout on a NBK 80’ down. Picked up 3 kings in the 8-10lb range: Killer Dolphin on SWR 68’ down, mag Blue Lagoon 92’ down, spinny with blue mystic fly on a 1-set dispey with ring 160’ back. After cutting through a 3-line tangle and getting the gear back in order, pick up three more kings of about the same size in about 140-150 FOW, two on the Killer Dolphin SWR 68’ down and one on a purple stinger on a 1-set dispey with ring 130’ back. All fish came on either a south or east troll. Could not get any rods to fire trolling north.

Started working our way in about 8:00pm to fish 120-90 FOW, N42’ 41.5’’. Hit fish in all directions with east/west the most productive and marked bait fish in 95 FOW. Three steelhead came on slide 3-set divers set 130’ to 160’ back with a Hitman and a Megatron like spoon. Pick up 3 more larger kings in the 11-14 lb range, two on Killer Dolphin on SWR 63’ down and the other on a purple blue spoon I have had forever 60 ’ down. Had one steelhead crush the Hitman at dusk which was the only fish lost and I lost it. Went 12 for 13 for the trip and everyone had a chance to bring in fish. Great night on the water.

Big Fish on the "Fishing Poles"

Fishing was great and catching was even better! Went 8 for 11 yesterday
evening... Six kings and two steelhead. All very nice fish with several kings
were in the mid to high teens in weight and one bumping 20. Fished from 100 to
155 FOW with fish most active 55 to 70 down. Flies and Spoons were both working
in blue, green, white and chrome combinations. Caught fish on riggers, wire and
braid dispseys, lead and copper. High line with orange/chrome spoon was quiet
all night. Great night to be on the water. Capt. Jim

Wardrobe Malfuction

On Saturday, my brother-n-law Dave and myself joined Capt. Rich, on the Corner Office. We fished from 4:30 to 10pm and ended the night 2 of 5, boating an 8 lb and a 10 lb steelhead. Both of these fish came 140 back on a dipsy set on 3 (no ring) with a half blue half silver spoon. We had two hits on a copper line with a meat rig plug - basically this is a j-plug type of lure that opens and you can pack it with meat or fish scent (Rich likes to use canned tuna). One of the great things about fishing with other people is seeing how the different gear and techniques used to fish for the same type of fish in the same water. The other hit came on a dipsy and blue fly set up.

Unfortunately, we missed two of the hits when one fish swam away with our meet rig, and the other with the flasher and fly because of equipment malfunctions. As you can imagine, we were all quite disappointed.

We fished off Laketown and south towards Saugatuck from 80 to 125 FOW. There were a dozen boats out, the flies weren't that bad, and the lake was calm. By the chatter on the radio, it sounded a little slow with similar action on the other boats. Thanks Capt Rich!

The Steelhead are Biting

It was a perfect fishing night Paul, Marc, and I on Thursday - EXCEPT for the FLIES. We had small flies, big flies, horse flies, bees, wasps, and a few other varieties. Fortunately, the good fishing overshadowed the fly factor.

We ended the night 4 for 8, 2 kings and 2 steelhead. The largest being a 15 lb king. We lost 2 more steelhead behind the boat. Well, we actually lost 3 of them - let me explain: The first steelhead we had to put in the box and net twice. After putting it in the cooler, I turned my head for a second and it jumped out, right back into the water. Net in hand, I looked for it behind the platform and saw him about 2 feet down lingering and dove the net down and netted this one for a second time. The interesting and lucky detail was that this fish was fresh as it had hit a down rigger and was brought in pretty quickly. It was incredibly lucky he didn't swim away immediately after hitting the water.

We took 2 hits on both Lead and Dipsies, and the Riggers were the hottest with 4 hits. A homespun, gold fly took two hits and a variety of spoons did the rest. We were straight out and a little north of the Channel in 90 to 110 FOW. The air shows that the Steelhead put on were amazing!

After the lines were in, we took a quick swim. 68 degrees on the Surface.

Wednesday on JD Charters

Wednesday was a three person charter with two very experienced anglers and one novice. The fish had moved out to deeper water and the top
temperatures in 110 FOW was 60 degrees, with 52 degrees at the ball set 50 down. There was a better breeze and by the end of the trip, waves were running 2-3 feet from the south. Pretty much the same program, but mostly on the boards and
a few steelhead on the riggers and dipsey rods.

Our best set up again for the 4 year old Kings was a boardline with full core and a blue dolphin spoon. We ended up 12 for 14 and Kings weighing 15 lbs and Steelhead about 10 lbs an one small
Lake Trout. J D Charters is running from slip R-8 (next to the Piper restaurant) at Eldean Shipyard.

Tuesday, June 26 - JD Charters

There was cold water near shore, due to strong east winds on Tuesday 6-26 and the
J D Lady had a full 6 person charter consisting of one adult that had done some
fishing with me but not for several years, two of his children and two of their
friends that were on their first Lake Michigan fishing charter. We had very
little wind, but a strong north and/or east current with surface temperatures at
90 FOW in the mid 50's and down temps of 43 degrees off the center rigger set at
50 feet. We hooked 13 fish but only brought 5 to the box. Fish came on dipseys
80 feet back and full cores with blue or orange spoons. No small fish for the
day, with 4 year old Kings at 13-15 lbs and the bigger of the two Steelhead at
11lbs.

Fished Saugatuck

I fished with Capt. Rich last night on the "Corner Office" (slip C-50) and also the Mike and the Boyz from C-10. We shot down to 100 FOW off Saugatuck and were fishing 4 down, 4 dipsys, and one lead line mostly in 100-120 FOW. It was a very slow start from 6-8pm and we ended up switching up the colors to try get something going. We put on White and white small ProKing that has been working well for me lately. This spoon was down 90 Feet and it then proceeded to get hit after hit, probably 5 in all. We ended the night with a weak 2 of 8, both kings and not very big. I missed a nice king at the net after the fish got tangle in the lead core and then got into a line on the rigger.

It was flat on the water and there were only 3 other boats fishing Saugatuck. It was little strange to see so little fishing activity on the Lake on a calm, Saturday night.

Net Overboard!

Jon, Marc, and I fished from 6-9pm yesterday. It had been the first time out for 2 weeks and there weren't any boats on the water that we could see, so we were guessing where to go and what to fish. We started in 90 and went as deep as 140, but we seemed to get the action in 100 to 120 FOW straight out from the channel. We ended the night 5 for 7 on fish and 0 for 1 on nets. The net went over the rail as the wind and waves picked up a bit; probably 2 - 5 foot waves last night.

After the net went over, the real fun began. After a long fight Mark reeled the tired 15 lb King to the platform and I pulled it up and in by the leader and then wrestled into the cooler. I merely turned my head to request a needle nose, and the King open the cooler and jumped back out. Fortunately, I was able to wrangle the king in my hands before he slipped back in the water (I nearly slipped in the water myself, but Jon got a grip of my waistband as precaution - remember it was pretty wavy and rolly out there). The next 15 lb king hit the port down rigger so hard, and the rod buried downward toward the bottom, then it swam right off the starboard side of the boat crossing lead, dypsy, and the other downrigger. We avoided a major mess, and there I was again, on the edge of the platform, trying to whisper (fish whisperer) this fish on the boat. First I tried to get a finger in the gill, but he shook me off, then, since it worked before, I grabbed the leader and hoisted. Unfortunately the leader or knot broke and this one swam away.

Besides three, 15 lb kings, we also caught a 10 steelhead that ripped 300 feet of line off the dipsy, and also a small laker. One King and the Laker came on a dipsy set on 1.5, 160 back, with a homemade blue mirage fly. 2 kings and the steelhead came on downriggers, 70 to 90 down, on a spoon with blue. We had one hit on lead, but the 3 lead lines were silent most of the night. The water temp was 63 nearly top to bottom and there was a strong current.

On Wednesday night, we did another Father-Son outing x 2.  Ryan & I went out on the "Fishing Poles" with Capt. Jim and his son Brennan.  We went out again to the 55 to 65 FOW.   I heard that JD Charters had limited out on his afternoon charter in those waters.  We stayed mostly south of the pierheads.  It ended up being a slow night and we finished 3 for 4, all kings, with one big fish at 14 lbs.

I heard from one of the other fisherman at the marina that his boat went North and was in 120 to 130 FOW and did better catching 9.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

It was a father and son trip last night.  After Ryan & I saw the cooler of Steelhead that JD Charters brought in from his morning charter, we were really excited to get on the water.  Capt Steve said to stay in close around 50 to 60 feet and tha small orange & red spoons was really working for Steelhead.

So, at 6pm we set up in 55 FOW, with 2 downriggers and 4 leadlines. And sure enough, the first fish on was an 8 lb steely.  We took another King, then Ryan had his work cut out with a 14 lb steelhead on leadline.  The fish worked so hard that on its final leg it came in Laketrout style, mouth open, surfing the rest of the way.  After that, it was mostly small kings.  We ended the night at 9:30, going 7 for 9.  We probably would have cracked the double digits, but we had 3 shakers that we dragged along for quite some time.  A lemonberry magnum spoon took 4 of the fish, including the 2 steelhead.  We didn't run any flies or dipsys.  We didn't mark many fish all night, but they were there.  Also, on the way in, the bait fish were jumping in Mac Bay.

From Capt Jim: Fished Sunday evening on friends boat from 6:00 to dark in a steady east wind. Went 7 for 9 all kings and all on spoons off dipsey's and riggers. Spoons with silver/chrome worked best in both mag and medium sizes. Riggers set at 55 to 90 and dipsey's 175 to 200 dialed at 3 and 1. For what its worth, first six fish came off port side of boat. Four lead lines were quiet all night, no copper fished. Fish Sonar was not working so we had no idea how deep of water we fished. I am guessing we started in about 90 and at one point after a long fight with a stubborn fish got pushed out past 150. Capt. Jim

This just in from "The Fishing Poles": Calm evening on Wednesday night with little or no wind. Fishing was great although catching was a bit slow, went 3 for 4, all kings with one weighing in at 15.8 lbs. All fish hit mag and medium spoons with allot of silver off riggers, dipseys and lead... No copper or fly hits. Set up in 90 FOW and worked all the way out to 160 and then back in to 90 by end of night. All hits came in 120 to 150 FOW. Flies were as bad as we have ever seen, although they were not biting they were thick! Capt. Jim

WOW!  Yes, WOW!  What an amazing morning on the water!  Jim (D-26), Mark (A25), and I fished from 6:30-11 and went 12 for 15.  We fished all over from 80 to 150 FOW.  We had so much happening that we weren't really paying much attention to water depth and direction, just trying to stay clear of the other boats.  Early on, the 2 down riggers with magnum spoons were very hot, then the lead core heated up, and finally, we took one on the one dipsy fly combo.  At most, we had 7 rods out, but most of the time only 5 or 6, and that kept us plenty busy.

We had multiple double headers and ended with 1 Laker, 2 Coho, and 9 Kings.  The biggest king was 15 lbs and most were 5 to 10 lbs.  I had a small pro king, silver and white spoon that took 3 fish.  A magnum lemonberry took 2, a blue and white magnum took 2, and another blue & white with little spots took 3.  There was no need to switch up any baits as everything was working that we started with.  We were fishing 40-75 down.

Well I finally got out fishing on the Rhino this morning.  Bill and I ended up catching 4 good kings (5, 8, 12, & 14 lbs) and we missed 3.  The fish were scattered all over the place as we fished mostly between 100 and 170 feet.  However, with one line still in the water, we caught our last King in 63 FOW on our way in.  Bill was actually moving for the pole to pull our last line when the Fish hit.  The fish came on a light blue fly on a dipsy, a silver cotton candy magnum spoon, and two other Magnum spoons.   Most hits came on the lead core.  The lake was flat, the fog was thick, and fishing was fun.

I rode along with Capt Steve on JD Charters this morning. It was a quick trip because of the early storms so we only fished betwen 8 and 11. We ended 4 of 6, all kings & some good weight to them too.  The copper and lead took 5 of 6 hits and spotted lemon ice was pretty hot too.  Even thought the storm seemed to calm the fishing down a little, the Lake is pretty flat and its a great day to get out on the water.

It was a Big Tuesday and a great May start for Salmon Fishing.  Two boats from the marina went out in the AM and had a great moring.  JD Charters went 17 for 21(mostly kings and some nice size - see photo) in 145 -170 FOW. Mostly spoons in yellow or green and they said they caught fish on all equipment but most on riggers at 75-90 down.
"Lean Machine" also was out in the morning and returned early with their limit. They fished a little shallower, so it sounds like the fish are everywhere, between 100-200.

Capt. Jim made it out for the first day of the season on Tuesday evening and went 12 for 16 in 150 to 200 FOW. All salmon (5-14 lbs.)on flies and spoons 60 to 100 feet down. Fish were hitting everything we threw at them with no special pattern or rig working best (but we did fish allot of white, blue and green). Took fish on copper, lead, downriggers and wire dipseys, braid dipseys were the only rods that did not have any action. Capt. Jim

I can't wait any longer! Hopefully the Rhino will launch tomorrow...

It's time to go fishing again!

Looks like the fishing has been pretty good lately.  I've heard from several fisherman that they are catching their limits.  Most are in the 130-180 feet of water and are having success on spoons and flies.  I hope to have my boat in the water in the next few days and be able to post a report of me own.
