The Fishing Poles Land Some Big Fish

Went out Tuesday evening to rough seas and a stiff NW wind. Ended up 8 for 12,
one steelhead and the rest kings. All nice fish over 10 lbs... To rough to
fish planer boards so ended up fishing dipseys and riggers with spoons and
flies, no plugs. Fish came 55 to 70 feet down in 85 to 140 FOW. Blue, green
and white combinations worked best. Good evening even though rough water made
it tough to fish. Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles

A Mexican Fishing Fiesta

Last night, I took out my friends from Mexico, Efren and Leo. Dave also made it out and Paul was first mate. We fished from 6 to 9 pm. The heat finally broke and there were strong NE winds last night making it difficult to keep a heading. Fortunately, the fish were cooperating and biting on any direction of troll. We did well in 110 to 140 FOW ending the night 5 for 8, with 4 nice sized Kings and 1 big Steelhead. The Lead Lines and Flies were hot last night and the riggers were slow with only one hit.

The same lures keep working for me. The All-Stars have been a small white/silver pro-king spoon, a Magnum LemonBerry spoon, a home-spun gold/white fly, and a green mirage type of fly. I've been running the flies 140 to 160 back on dipsys set on 1.

Good Night at the Office!

From the "Corner Office" - Interesting night on the water running solo with 3-rods. Set out south of Holland and worked the 120 FOW north of Saugatuck. Boated a large laker instantly on Killer Blue set down 50 feet on a 2-color SWR. Picked up 4 more kings in the 8lb range on a south troll, all on the SRW set-up during the course of the evening. All kings were release successfully. Went looking for steel deeper but came up empty. Pushed in to 60 FOW and turned north for the troll back to port. Ran through bait fish in 58 FOW and had all 3 rods explode within 90 seconds. Boated a 14lb king, one slightly smaller and the third I dropped at the back of the boat during netting (my bad). It went belly up so I backed the boat up on both engines and got right on top of the fish. Dropped the net down and it came to life and went back to the deeps. Better off but I would have like the chance to boat all three on my own. The other two rods that went off, not that it mattered were a copper yellow edge stinger on a dipsey 3-set 110 feet out and the dark blue fly on a spinny 45 feet down. Great way to finish the evening.

A little white pro king

I took my friend Bill and his family out fishing last night. There were 9 of us total on the boat so we were ready for a couple triple headers. We didn't get a triple, but we had one double and steady action from the time we set lines at 5:30pm. It was a bit rough and we pulled lines just after 8pm because there were several sea-sick crew who had been tolerating it for the past couple of hours. Even though we brought in lines early, we ended 5 for 7 with two big kings and 3 nice Steelhead. Interestingly, with 9 lines out, 4 of our 7 hits came on a white pro king spoon on a 12 color lead line. A green mirage fly caught the 2 kings on a dipsy 160 back set on 1. The other spoon to see action was the Lemon Berry Magnum, 90 down.

We stayed in 120 to 135 FOW. Captain Jim fished inside of us, in 100 to 115 FOW and ended his night 8 for 15.

Fishing Fireworks on the 4th!

July 4th Evening Troll -
Remarkable 4th of July evening troll catching fish on all eight set-ups. Set lines last
night at 5:15pm starting in 150 FOW, N42’ 43.5’’ trolling south. Started with 12 lb lake trout on a NBK 80’ down. Picked up 3 kings in the 8-10lb range: Killer Dolphin on SWR 68’ down, mag Blue Lagoon 92’ down, spinny with blue mystic fly on a 1-set dispey with ring 160’ back. After cutting through a 3-line tangle and getting the gear back in order, pick up three more kings of about the same size in about 140-150 FOW, two on the Killer Dolphin SWR 68’ down and one on a purple stinger on a 1-set dispey with ring 130’ back. All fish came on either a south or east troll. Could not get any rods to fire trolling north.

Started working our way in about 8:00pm to fish 120-90 FOW, N42’ 41.5’’. Hit fish in all directions with east/west the most productive and marked bait fish in 95 FOW. Three steelhead came on slide 3-set divers set 130’ to 160’ back with a Hitman and a Megatron like spoon. Pick up 3 more larger kings in the 11-14 lb range, two on Killer Dolphin on SWR 63’ down and the other on a purple blue spoon I have had forever 60 ’ down. Had one steelhead crush the Hitman at dusk which was the only fish lost and I lost it. Went 12 for 13 for the trip and everyone had a chance to bring in fish. Great night on the water.

Big Fish on the "Fishing Poles"

Fishing was great and catching was even better! Went 8 for 11 yesterday
evening... Six kings and two steelhead. All very nice fish with several kings
were in the mid to high teens in weight and one bumping 20. Fished from 100 to
155 FOW with fish most active 55 to 70 down. Flies and Spoons were both working
in blue, green, white and chrome combinations. Caught fish on riggers, wire and
braid dispseys, lead and copper. High line with orange/chrome spoon was quiet
all night. Great night to be on the water. Capt. Jim

Wardrobe Malfuction

On Saturday, my brother-n-law Dave and myself joined Capt. Rich, on the Corner Office. We fished from 4:30 to 10pm and ended the night 2 of 5, boating an 8 lb and a 10 lb steelhead. Both of these fish came 140 back on a dipsy set on 3 (no ring) with a half blue half silver spoon. We had two hits on a copper line with a meat rig plug - basically this is a j-plug type of lure that opens and you can pack it with meat or fish scent (Rich likes to use canned tuna). One of the great things about fishing with other people is seeing how the different gear and techniques used to fish for the same type of fish in the same water. The other hit came on a dipsy and blue fly set up.

Unfortunately, we missed two of the hits when one fish swam away with our meet rig, and the other with the flasher and fly because of equipment malfunctions. As you can imagine, we were all quite disappointed.

We fished off Laketown and south towards Saugatuck from 80 to 125 FOW. There were a dozen boats out, the flies weren't that bad, and the lake was calm. By the chatter on the radio, it sounded a little slow with similar action on the other boats. Thanks Capt Rich!
