Shane and I went out last night one more time before I haul the boat.  We hadn't heard anything, so we just started at 80 feet and headed west.  The boat was having some battery and electrical issues from the start and it wasn't too long before all the electronics and helm controls/panel were out.  Because of this and the nav lights not turning on, we only fished from 4:30 to 6:30.  We ended up with one 6 lb King on a full core and magnum white/pink mirage-like pro king spoon.  It was probably around 100 FOW, but without any instruments its a bit of a guess.  I did hear that the fishing was really good in shallow and near the Saugatuck pier heads.

This is what the great fishing look like for us last night!

Great Fishing last night!  The Kings were biting and Buzz and I had a ton of fun on TJ's boat fishing in the Steelheaders Tuesday night league!  We left the pier heads at 6 and started pulling lines at 8:30.  In that short amount of time we went 11 for 14 with 7 Kings, 3 Steelhead, and 1 Coho.  We did miss the 2 biggest fish of the night though which would have definitely helped us at the weigh in.  As it was, we took 3rd place for the night as several boats weighed in some nice big Kings.  Everything came on meat or flies in 120 to 150 FOW and copper rods had most of the action.  Straight out of Holland and fish were biting on any trolling direction and we were marking them consistently.

I fished with TJ/Bending Limits in the Waypoint Classic on Saturday morning.  We started out going for Kings, North of Saugy,95-105 FOW.  After only going 1-4, we moved in a little shallower and put the trout baits on (Spin-n-glows) and started working the bottom.  We took several, but not enough to weigh 12 fish as we needed.   We ended 8 for 15 with 7 Lake Trout.  A lot of kings and steelhead were caught by several boats with the steel head out deeper in the 110 - 140 range.

We did catch our 5 fish in the Tuesday night league, but not the way we intended.  With TJ on Bending Limits we set up just North of Holland around 100 FOW and tried for kings with Meat Rigs and Flies.  After a real slow go at with a couple of hits, but no fish, we moved in a little shallower around 90 FOW to target Lake Trout with spin-n-glows and try to fill the cooler.  The Lake trout were biting and it wasn't long until we had 4 Lake Trout and 1 king in the box.  We ended 5 of 9.

What was real awesome was the 28.5 lb King that another boat landed and had at the weigh-in.  What a big fish!  Lots of Kings were caught on Tuesday night, so they are starting to be caught with more regularity.

The Big Red Tournament was a lot of fun but once again the fishing, for the most part didn't go our way. Team Rhino (Mark, Marc, Wade, Paul, and Tony) was in right in the middle of the pack after day 1 when we caught 3 smaller steelhead and a 12 lb king.  The action was on 4 different poles: 3 lead lines with spoons and one downrigger with a meat rig and we ended 4-6 with the action coming in 70-85 FOW.  Day 2 was another story where the fishing was more difficult because of the wind and waves and the fish didn't seem to be biting.  We only caught 1 steelhead and couldn't get much to happen including marking very many fish and spent our time in the 70 to 120 foot range until the tournament was cancelled an hour early because of big waves.

On Friday I went out and practiced fished with Capt. TJ on Bending Limits.  We had a difficult time targeting kings in the first couple hours so we went back to targeting Lake trout and before noon we had 10 Lakers, 2 Kings, and a Steelhead.  Our biggest fish was a 15 lb king that we caught after snagging somebody's copper that had broken off.  After reeling in the copper, TJ then hand-lined in the second copper to find a freshly broken off King.  Bending Limits and a few other of the Pro boats finished in the top 10 in the Big Red and it was definitely due to their ability to target Lake Trout and fill up the cooler.

I fished with Capt. TJ in the Tuesday Night Steelheaders League.  We ended 4-6.  We mostly targeted Lake Trout, but they had moved out of TJ's normal hunting grounds so the action was slow and we couldn't get the 5 fish that we needed for the weigh in.  We ended up trying for kings in the last hour and picked up a nice 14lb king around 95 FOW but that was it after the 3 Lakers we took earlier around the same depth.  For the night, we were 4th in the league for the Biggest Box and probably 3rd for the Biggest fish.  I thing the biggest fish went to a 16 lb Lake Trout.  Most boats struggled only catching 2 to 4 fish.

Sunday Morning:  3 for 4.  Slow action overall.  South wind pushed warmer water into the east bank.  Laker and Steelie hit in 150-160 FOW.  Coho (surprise) came on lead with meat and a large paddle on the business end in 115 FOW.  Fished close to Saugatuck.  Did notice a scum line about 110 FOW but no notable action.  Small flies and biting flies - it was very buggy out there today.

From Captain Rich on Fin Warrior - Fishing 90 - 110, Picked up two steelhead last night. One on a dark colored J-plug I painted myself out on a full core and the other on a Dipsey 40' down with Monkey Puke on the business end.  Ran meat but no takers.

Great weather last night, so the Tuesday Night Steelheaders went on as planned.  I fished with Capt. TJ on Bending Limits and we targeted Lake trout and went 9 for 12 fishing in 80-90 FOW down by Saugatuck.  At the end of the night we switched things up and tried for kings, but without any luck.  At the weigh-in, our top 5 fish came in at just over 50 lbs which was second place for the night, while the top boat had a 60 lb box and the biggest fish caught was a 14 lb king.

Tony, Paul and I fished from 6:30 to 9:30 last night and ended 2 for 4 with a 8 lb steelhead that came on a 3 color on a reg. size  green/white pro-king with an orange back.  The other fish was a 13 lb king that came on a green fly and spin-doctor with spots on dypsy.  We had a real big king get away as well.  The best action was on on a NE troll 85 - 95 FOW.

Lots of steelhead have been caught off the pier in the last few days.

My Son Ryan was home for a a couple days so I took him out fishing last night. We caught an 8 lb Lake Trout and two King Salmon of 5 and 12 lbs.   We had the action around 95 to 110 FOW and the trout and one king came on a full core with a magnum white and green spoon with 5 big spots.  The other king came on the same old green/pearl fish catcher and orange mirage fly that has been working so well for me this year.  We didn't have any meat out last night and only fished from 7 to 9:30pm.

I'll be giving it another try tonight provided we don't get too wet...

The sunset was pretty great!

This report is from the Fishing Pols:  Went out Saturday PM and washed lures for several hours before boating a nice big king that pushed 15lbs in 110 FOW.  Didn't try for any Lakers so I can't comment on the Laker fishing.  Ran spoons, plugs, meat and flies mostly in the white/blue/green combinations.  Very few marks on screen.   Capt. Jim

Thursday night

Shane and fished from tunnel park north to about a mile south of port sheldon and back. We ended 1 for 6 with a small king on a meet rig 60 down.  We had a 10+ lb steelhead on full core put on a big aerial show before it spit the hook. A purple and black pro king magnum on full core took 4 hits.  Its too bad we couldn't keep the fish on the line.  Most action was around 120.

Thank you,
Wade

Unfortunately the Tuesday Night Steelheaders League was cancelled again because of big waves.  If you are planning a fishing trip, don't pick Tuesday, as its the Big Wave day-of-the-week...

Well, it wasn't the best night to go out fishing, but I have a Marina Party on the 4th that I haven't caught enough Salmon for, so despite the weather, we headed out around 6:30.  I heard that some Kings were caught North in 140 -160 FOW, so Dave, Paul, & I pounded our way North in the 3-6 footers, then headed with the waves on a SSE troll.  We only fished 5 rods because of the tough conditions and it wasn't till we made it to 130 FOW outside of Holland that we missed the first bite, 60 down, on a white/green magnum with spots.  Shortly after, the lead core with a purple and black Pro-King magnum started ripping out and kept going with drag cranked up.  Boom, its double time, the dipsy went with a green fish catcher and home-made orange mirage fly.  As I was bringing in a 7 lb king on the dipsy, Dave had his hands full on the lead core as he ended up submarining the large planer board and the line just kept going out.  Not wanting to loose the fish or the gear, we pulled the other 3 rods and backed down on the board/fish.  The board finally popped up and Dave was able to bring in this beefy 14 lb king.  We fished for another hour until 9:30 and the waves calmed a bit, but no more action to report.

I'll probably head out on Friday night in order to make sure there enough filets to put on the grill Saturday.

Unfortunately the Tuesday night league was cancelled last night due to waves.  We fished for almost an hour, but didn't have any luck in the 110 to 130 range.

If it's not rough out, I'll give it a try tonight.

I'll be fishing the Tuesday nights Summer Tournament put on by the Holland Steelheaders, with Capt TJ on Bending Limits.  Last night was our first night in the league.  We had a slow start, loosing our first couple of fish.  But, then things picked up and we ended the night 10 for 18.  Don't get to excited, as were running the Lake Trout program and caught only Lake Trout.  We fished in 100 to 130 FOW.  The biggest was 12 lbs and the smallest didn't make the size limit.  We had several in the 10 lb range.  For the night we took 1st place with the Best Box of fish (5 fish weighing 50 lbs total - in this league you weigh your 5 best fish).  Not bad for our first night in the league.

A couple of boats did go for Kings, and the Big Fish of the tournament was a 14lb king.

It looks like it will be Smoked Lake Trout at our marina 4th of July Party!

This Reports from Capt. TJ on Bending limits:
Lake Michigan fishing charters Father’s Day weekend fishing report!
This past weekend was jam packed with action. Fishing is very good out of Holland.  Friday evening we had 21 bites, but were only able to get 8 of the fiesty fish to the net.  Saturday morning was our best trip, landing 17 fish! 14 Lake Trout and 3 salmon.  Saturday afternoon the bite was a little tougher, but we were still able to land 8 fish. We also landed 3 of the biggest fish of the year on Saturday evening!!
The lake trout are loving our new Yakima spin n glos on the bottom.
The kings continue to want nothing but big weenie meat rigs!  Blue balls again was our most consistent one!!
What a weekend of fishing!   Book your trip now! Dates are filling quickly!

Well, with no son around for Father's Day, Kris joined me fishing this morning.  We fished from 6:45 to 9:30 and ended 2 for 2.  The first fish was a 11 lb Lake Trout that bit on a full core in 80 FOW on a UV wonder-bread glow magnum spoon.  We kept heading west and when we finally turned south in 160 FOW we hooked a 15 lb King on a full core with a Snow White Magnum ProKing.  It didn't act like a king as it jumped several times before we were able to get to the planer board.  We headed back east and didn't have any action on the way in.  There were no waves and very few boats out, which was surprising for a Sunday Morning and Father's Day.  By the time we pulled lines, the flies were overtaking the boat.

Friday night

I had a full boat of friends on Friday night, but we didn't get a full cooler of fish. Marc, Shane, Chuck & I were lucky to get the skunk out finishing 1 for 1 with a small king. We were all over 80 to 140 but couldn't even mark much on the screen.   It was a beautiful night and cameras were used on the sunset instead of the fish.

Thank you,
Wade

TJ joined me last night and we fished from 6:30 to 10pm straight out of Holland.  Early on we covered a lot of water with out much action in the 140 to 180 range, then moved in closer.  We ended up 2 for 7 and had a hard time hooking the fish.  We had a real nice steelhead jumping around a dozen or so times before it shook the spoon (lead core).  The two we caught were 7 and 11 lb kings. Green was the hot color with 3 hits coming on silver with green and spots, 1 on a white/glow with green and spots, 2 on green and gold with silver back, and one on greenish fly.  The meat rig was quiet.  The lake was flat, the visibility was questionable at times, but it was a lot of fun at the end of the night when we got the double header going.

I hope to be out there again on Friday.

Marc and I fished last night from 7 to 10pm.  I had some good intel from Bending Limits and Black Pearl Charters that the kings were biting in 160 to 180, so we started fishing out deep.  After an hour without bites and seeing nothing on the fish finder, we worked are way back in.  We marked fish regularly in the 135 to 145 area but again, no bites.  Finally during the sunset hour we got a little action as we were headed back east towards the pier.  We pick up a small king on a Lemon Ice Magnum on a full core in 85 FOW and then a nice 14 lb king, 60 down, on a gold magnum spoon with green sprayed on both edges.  The fish seem to be moving around a bit.

Went out Friday evening with Mark (D-23) around 6:30 and it was a bit sporty with some big waves rolling through.  We ended 2 for 3.  A nice 7 lb steelhead came on white with green spoon that looked just like the steelhead itself, on  a full core.  A 3 lb king came on a green flasher with home-made orange mirage fly on dypsy 150 back.  Of course, the one that got away felt like a real nice king and came on the a green alwive magnum spoon, 60 down.  Because of the strong North wind and waves, we fished south to Saugatuck from 85 to 65 FOW.  We turned around about 8:30 and headed back toward Holland.  We picked up lines shortly after that as Mark was starting to turn green with the added wave action.

Hopefully we'll be back out there tonight and with this East wind, it should be pretty calm.

Had nice first trip on the Rhino last night.  Capt. TJ of Bending Limits road along as well.  The fishing was slow and we didn't mark many either.  We spent most of the time around 110 to 125 and went 1 for 2 on small kings.  The king came on a Mag blue Dolphin Spoon. Heading toward the pier at sunset we picked up a nice 8 lb Laker in 80 FOW on a green fly.   Hopefully I'll be back out there on Friday.

Sorry for the lack of reports, but I hope to get the Rhino launched this week and start fishing on a regular basis.  The word from the Grand Haven Tournament was that the Lake Trout continue to easy to target and the kings are quite a bit harder to pinpoint and find on a day-to-day basis.  Good amounts of kings were caught in the 10 to 16 lb range.

I fished on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday on the Bending Limits Fishing Team in South Haven Tournament (They fished Friday too).  We had some great practice fishing but couldn't find the kings during the tournament.  Capt. TJ's report is below.  Thanks TJ, it was still a lot of fun!

"This weekend was our first tournament of the year in South Haven. I'll be completely honest, we flat out tanked over the weekend. After great fishing Thursday with 8 kings and a bunch of trout and going 12-21 on kings on Friday. We struggled to land fish Saturday and only weighed 6 fish. Sunday we couldn't buy a salmon bite if our lives depended on it. Our biggest king was 11 inches. On a positive note we did have some really great footage from both days for the Salmon Showdown. Congrats to Nick Everse on his tournament win in Holland Saturday. Congrats to Best Chance Too on the pro side win. Congrats to Breaktime on the 333 victory! You guys are all fantastic fishermen!! On to Grand Haven in two weeks!"

I made it out today aboard TJ's boat with Buster.  The 3 of us nearly caught our limit and ended with around 12 for 16, fishing around 10' of water.  The fish were all pretty small, except for the one-that-got-away, which was nice Brown over 10 lbs about 15' behind the boat.  We caught 5 small browns, 1 Laker and the rest kings.  We released several small fish.  It was a sunny and flat morning - A great day to be out!  Thanks TJ!

Anybody getting the itch to go fishing?  I sure am!  It won't be too much longer and the ice burgs will have melted and we can get out there again.  I've heard that some of the pier fishing has been Amazing in the last couple weeks!

There are a lot of tournaments this summer, so mark your calendars and put your crews together - A team that's practiced and prepared is more likely to win.

If anyone is still looking for a slip this summer, please give me a call.
